This painting by William Bouguereau is one of many of his female nude works. Titled Apres le bain. After the bath, features a young woman standing on the shore after taking a bath in the sea.
Her facial expression and body language suggest a scene of calm and serenity as the waves gently lap against the shore. Although she is naked, she is clearly relaxed and oblivious to her surroundings. She has a medium/slightly athletic build with medium sized rounded breasts. She is leaning on a rock to steady herself as she appears to have stood on a shell or piece of debris. She is reaching down with her right hand to delicately remove what ever it is that is causing her discomfort. This shows her well proportioned shoulder, slender upper arm and forearm. She has long dark hair which appears to be platted and bunched up on the back of her head and held up in the middle with a band which can be seen to the back of her head. Her towel or robe hangs loosely over her knee and is discretely covering her genital area as it drapes to the ground.
William Bouguereau was an expert at painting realistic hands and feet as demonstrated in these close ups. Notice the photo like quality and detail making them look alive and almost touchable.
The above account is my interpretation of the work and should in no way be taken as fact.
